For the second time this month, the Gold Coast Screw Piers Queensland Classic Sports Sedans Championship will be on-track.

Two weeks ago, they contested Round 2 of the series out at Morgan Park, as part of the Australian Motor Racing Series Meeting.

This weekend, the penultimate championship round of 2018 will be held at Queensland Raceway, as part of a massive on-track schedule at the annual ‘2 Days of Thunder’.

Last time the series visited Queensland Raceway, Geoff Taunton was the man to beat – utterly dominant in his MARC V8, claiming three wins and a second-place finish, to claim round honours.

Two weeks ago, he scored victory in the opening two races at Morgan Park, but that was as good as it got for him, as he didn’t take the start for Race 3 on the Sunday.

On points, the round was a dead-heat between Tim Tritton and Tony Saint, who finished the weekend with 70 points each, ahead of Greg McIntyre on 68.

This weekend, eleven cars are entered for the four-race program, with Taunton, Saint and Tritton heading the field.

Making his Queensland Classic Sports Sedans debut this weekend will be Robert Gooley. Normally, we see Gooley pairing up with Wade Scott in the Queensland Production Car Championship, but this weekend he’ll field his BLUE Mitsubishi Evo, that is more commonly seen on the Sprint and Time Attack scene.

He’s confident of a good showing, and he believes the field will be surprised by the sheer speed of his Mitsubishi machine.

In the eleven car field, there’s a little bit of everything, from Porsches, to a Stockcar and some OzTrucks, plus a Mazda RX7, Taunton’s MARC car, Gooley’s Evo and a few Fords as well.

Following the completion of this round, there’ll be a wait of over four months, before the series will return to Queensland Raceway, for the final round of the season, when the 2018 champion will be crowned.

As for this weekend - practice takes place on Friday, with qualifying first up on Saturday morning, ahead of a four-race program (2 x 10 laps + 2 x 12 laps) across the weekend.
